The Future of Speculative Fiction 5 June, 2023 – Posted in: Articles, Books – Tags: , , ,

Ab Astra Books specialises in the speculative fiction genres. Namely science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and all their related sub-genres. It’s a fun branch of fiction as it offers a unique variety to readers. This is because the ideas are interesting and the stories offer surprising paths and points of view. But what is the future of speculative fiction? I have some ideas.

Firstly, there will be an expansion of human diversity in the genres. In recent years all types of speculative fiction have seen an increase in human characters from increasingly diverse backgrounds. Subsequently, it’s becoming a beacon of inclusion for all people. Speculative fiction has always been more readily adaptable to the changes in our society. And that will only become more apparent.

Secondly, I see a rise in satirical science fiction that comments on the world today. Humour in science fiction is nothing new. But, with the problem of rising fascism and regressive attitudes in leadership, speculative fiction will offer a place for expression. An underground channel to make comments not readily seen by such leaders. It will be possible to illuminate problems openly without fear of immediate reprisals.

Thirdly, speculative fiction will continue to offer acceptance to youth who feel on the outside of the normal social streams. The speculative fiction community is extremely open. From the most exuberant to the most introverted, the community of speculative fiction has room for us all. Undoubtedly, it will continue on this path.

Lastly, I expect unique and unexpected surprises. Speculative fiction has always been the playground for those authors whose minds work a little differently than the average person’s. Accordingly, authors will come up with ideas that I can’t imagine.

These are just a few of the trends I foresee in speculative fiction and can’t wait to see what the future brings.
