The Magician opens with a dark and dramatic event: the murder of Sorb, a death spider who was – until his untimely end – captain of the guard. At first sight it looks as though humans are responsible, and Niall promises to do all he can to uncover the killers.
In the course of his investigations, he learns that Sorb – together with some old cronies – has gone on eating humans, in direct violation of the treaty Niall negotiated. Then a corpse with webbed feet is discovered. It becomes clear that the killers of Sorb were neither human nor spider, but some other unknown lifeform…
